I am very proud to welcome you to UTC@harbourside.

We offer our students an excellent academic, technical and vocational education focused on science, technology, computing, engineering and maths, as well as a caring and exciting place to learn. In addition to this, in 2017 we launched our brand new Technical Skills Centre to teach post-16 qualifications in plumbing and electrical installation.

2017 also saw our first set of exam results. It was great to see so many students following their passion for science and engineering to university or into jobs with leading employers. Their achievements in the subjects they love is reflected in the fact that nearly two-thirds of all our vocational qualification passes were top Distinction or Distinction Star grades.

At the UTC@harbourside, science links our subjects and we are proud that learning is applied to solve real-world problems, locally and globally. We enable our students to flourish throughout their education and encourage them to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Our aim is that each and every one of our students will leave us as a confident young person who is fully prepared for the next stage of their studies or ready to join the working world.

And it is a world where STEM skills are in great demand. According to the UK Commission for Employment & Skills, 43% of science, technology, engineering and maths vacancies are hard to fill. This is mainly down to a shortage of applicants with the required skills and experience.

Students – if you want to exceed your expectations in STEM, or put your talents to the test in a technical career, then the UTC is where you can achieve it. Studying will be demanding and you will need to work hard, but the rewards can be huge. We’re different to other schools because, if you choose to take an academic or vocational route, you can focus on the STEM subjects that you are passionate about while also having the opportunity to study other subjects such as geography or psychology.

This will give you access to the best universities, jobs, higher-level programmes and apprenticeships. Alternatively, if you choose to join our Technical Skills Centre you will work alongside industry experts who will recognise and help develop your talent and who one day you could employ you.

Parents – I recognise that one of the most important things that you can give your child is a good education and what matters to us the most is high-quality teaching, learning and individual support. We will work actively with you to give the support, commitment, care and energy that will launch your child into their own exciting future and career.

Our iconic building, on the harbour in Newhaven, won the Sussex Heritage Trust Award for the quality and excellence of its design. Our unique setting is reflected in our values; we place our environment, and creating a sustainable future, high on our list of priorities. The UTC also acts as a gateway to Europe which brings so many opportunities to our students, so get your passports ready!

I hope that you will come and meet the UTC team at one of our open events or arrange to meet us in person. We would be love to give you a tour and show you what studying with us is like.

If you have any queries we would be delighted to help. Do get in touch or just pop in to see us. We look forward to meeting with you soon.
